When My 15-Year-Old Became My Teacher: Lessons in Listening

Strength doesn’t always mean pushing forward. Sometimes it means listening—especially when the wisdom comes from your own child.

I was determined to teach my adaptive yoga class. But my 15-year-old son noticed what I didn’t want to admit—my slurred speech, my exhaustion—and gently told me I needed to rest.

Of course, I insisted I was fine. Minutes later, I was leaning against the couch, too tired to move. Fifteen minutes before class, I finally accepted he was right: I couldn’t teach safely today.

💡 This is the very lesson I encourage in my students and community: honor your body, listen to its signals, and understand that pausing is not weakness. It’s wisdom.

What touched me most wasn’t just his words, but his care—helping me gather my things, walking me back to bed, and reminding me that love itself can be the greatest teacher.

💜 Sometimes strength is in perseverance. Sometimes it’s in play. And sometimes, it’s in listening to our children.

Closing Reflection

Living with chronic illness often means walking a delicate line between perseverance and rest. Sometimes, those who love us can see the truth before we’re ready to admit it. Their compassion is a gift—a reminder that true strength includes listening, receiving, and allowing care.

💜 Who in your life has reminded you to pause, rest, or listen when you needed it most?
